On this date, which is also the Equinox, the Sun enters the sign of Libra, fittingly, the sign of the balanced scales.
Like the scales, Libras prefer to be on an even keel. They easily tune in to how people relate to one another and partnerships of all sorts. For a Libra, everything is better when done together.
Venus, planet of beauty and social grace, rules Libra. Books, music, flowers, and perfume are typical delights. If their environment is not aesthetically pleasing, Libras can become unhappy, without even realizing that their surroundings may be at least partly to blame for their distress.
They have been uncharitably accused of being wishy-washy or indecisive, but this is because they strive always to be equitable and objective so that decisions are made based on what’s best for everyone. Obviously (to everyone but Libras), this is not easy to do!
In addition, they are superb at seeing all sides of a situation. Unlike some, they expect and are at home with the complexities of life. They hate conflict, though, and may study every possible angle in the hopes of avoiding confrontation, creating a tendency to fickleness or procrastination. But Libras make outstanding judges, lawyers, or politicians.
Their ability to be tactful and diplomatic in all circumstances is renowned.
For All of Us, While the Sun is in Libra
At this time of year, may we all be graced with the gifts of wise Libra, embracing and cultivating beauty. It would be a better world if we could all incorporate their understanding that life is rarely simple, but is rich, complex and multi-faceted.
How helpful it would be if we were all able to honor the viewpoints of others, especially even those with whom we disagree.
As extremism and polarization threaten to undo the very foundations of our civilization, we would be wise to use this time of Libra to find common ground of peace and mutual good.
Learning from Libra how to walk the middle path of diplomacy and equanimity is not just a good idea, it is probably the only hope for humanity’s future well-being and survival.
And like wise Libra, when we must pass judgment, we must never forget that it always comes with a karmic payback: sooner or later, every single time.
During this magical time, therefore, may we serve the ideal of Justice, who, with the scales, also holds a two-edged sword of truth and compassion. May we strive to see and act with clarity, discernment, and only the most gracious kinds of fairness to all.
