Not Wordless Wednesday: The Gayatri Mantra

To chant the Gayatri Mantra
purifies the chanter.
To listen to the Gayatri Mantra
purifies the listener.

As you may know, I am leaving town today for an extended period of silent retreat during which I will be offline and out of touch.

So I depart sharing this lovely video of Raghav Sachar singing the Gayatri Mantra.  The Gayatri Mantra is chronicled in the Rig Veda, which was written in Sanskrit about 2500 to 3500 years ago. It was almost certainly chanted for many centuries before that.

I far prefer the version recorded by my friend Willow le Fey, but she hasn’t (hint, hint, Willow!) made a video to go with it. (Yet!)

The Gayatri is one of my favorite devotional prayers of all time. Here are the words:

Aum Bhur Bhuvah Swah, Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

Here is the translation that Willow wrote, which I love:

May there be harmony between the mortal, immortal, and divine planes.  Meditate on the most brilliant splendor of the Sun God.  May He stimulate our intellect and inspire us to take the right action at the right time.

I am sending you these blessings each day while I am gone.

See you again soon.
Love,
~ Beth

  1. I’ve recently discovered this mantra. It’s beautiful and feels profoundly healing. The version I heard first was on an album Magical chants by Namaste. Their version is on Youtube as well under “Namaste – Gayatri Mantra”. Thanks for sharing this version Beth.

  2. You’re so welcome! I agree completely, Leah.. It unfailingly centers me with the most harmonic feeling of peace, that certainly flows out to the many realms.
